Goodyear Farms Cemetery Stakeholders Meeting and Focus Group
City of Avondale is hosting a Goodyear Farms Cemetery Stakeholders Meeting on Dec. 6. The City is inviting members of the community that have vested interest in the cemetery to take part in an important focus group to review the cemetery policy, discuss proposed improvements to the site, and provide suggestions on how to continue to honor the legacy of those buried there.
In 2010, the City of Avondale was privileged to take over the operation of the Goodyear Farms Cemetery, which has been in existence since 1918. Once the property of Goodyear Farms and later SunCor, the cemetery located at 3900 N Santa Fe Trail is the final resting place for the migrant workers who worked in the cotton farms, as well as their descendants. Many buried there in the very beginning were victims of the flu pandemic of 1918. Also buried there are military veterans and at least one former city Councilmember, Amando Sernas. The City recognizes that this is a very unique place in the Southwest Valley, with a strong link to our community’s rich agricultural history.
The Goodyear Farms Cemetery Stakeholders Meeting and Focus Group will be hosted Wednesday, December 6, 2017, 6-7:00 p.m at Avondale City Hall; 11465 W Civic Center Drive, Avondale, AZ 85323.
If you are interested in attending the meeting, please RSVP to Gloria Baca 623-333-2626 or gbaca@avondale.org .
